Jaguar S-type 420 - 1968

Having a Jaguar was always a secret wish. Or perhaps not since I always was a fan of XJ6. Nowadays more affordable although expensive to mantain. So the wish has only been a dream for long time. Now and then I look to them, but just that.

After my cousin bought in 2003 an S-Type 3.8S, from 1967, my research increased. Still aiming one XJ6 4.2 series I, but never saw the right silver metallic in decent condition or price.

Until one day my cousin spoted and ad in France (Retroviseur magazine) of this car, in a very interesting price. Obviously needing repair but tempting anyway. After some sleepless nights I decided to go forward. Could sell it later if I regret it anyway.

In the end it was a lenghty process: bought it without seeing it, jus one or two photos, then two long months to complete the transportation saga; more few months to legalize and get a licence plate from 1968. Meanwhile the restauration process went better than expected.

Some photos when the car arrived from Paris.

The 420 S-type 420 is a transition model between Mk I, II and S-type (and also the 240/340) and later XJ6. Keeping the same profile from S-type (except the new front grill) and inside very similar, it is equipped with the new XK engine 4.2 with 245 BHP developped for the XJ6. Also with the brakes and suspension of XJ6. This has been a neglected model, that is now beeing rediscovered by collectors with increasing value.

Some photos of the restauration process, paiting and triming.

My wife drove this car to the historical Rally Histórico Luso-Caramulo - Sept 2006 (I drove the PV544)

Two distinct S-types: my cousin's 3.8 S '67 (produced between 1963-68) and my 420 (less than 10.000 units made between 1966-68)

Ponte de Lima, August 2006

This car is available for weddings of other events renting: e-mail.
